Etching agent for Al Alloys

Hello
I am trying to etch my Al specimen for microstructure analysis (grain
size, rolling direction, crystal deformation).
Below is the link
-----

---Macro etch

Mixed Acids
5ml HF
20ml Nitric Acid
20ml HCl
60ml Water

Useful macro etch for most Al based materials. Reveals grain size,
rolling directions and welded joints. De-smut in 35% Nitric Acid
afterwards.

---------------

I used for macro etching (link says, Useful macro etch for most Al
based materials. Reveals grain size, rolling directions and welded
joints). This reagent for macro etch is not working for my Al specimens
(Al 6061 and Al 1100)?

Also, the link says De-smut in 35% Nitric Acid afterwards....after
macro etch? what is De-smuth?

Amit
