Appoximating large numbers

Hi,

Forgive me if this is the wrong group for my question (if it is, I would
appreciate a pointer to a more appropriate group).

I am working on a simulation where one of the tasks is approximating the
value of very large integers. I don't have the [computational] time to
attempt to factor these numbers, plus getting the EXACT value of the large
number is not important.

What IS important is that I find a method (equation, etc.) that will obtain
a number that is CLOSE to the original number, where CLOSE is able to be
parameterized.

Does anyone know of any references/literature I might look at as a starting
point?

Thank you very much,
BT
