Placing objects in density field, appropriate newsgroup.

The NA FAQ says:

"NA generally includes those problems involving continuous functions
of real or complex variables, as opposed to solely discrete variables
and functions."

So I'm not really sure where to post my question. Basically, I have a
large MxN density field and I want to randomly place objects in it,
according to the density, but also with some constraints like minimum
distance between objects. The algorithm I have come up with is
relatively slow, and isn't giving satisfactory results, especially
when the constraints conflict with the density field, so I am looking
for some advice. Before I describe my problem in more detail, I want
to figure out where the best place to post it is. The problem seems
more discrete than most of the topics in this newsgroup, but I could
not find any others that looked appropriate; the alt.sci.math.* groups
look pretty inactive, other than that, my choices seem limited.

If this is the best place then I'll describe the problem; if not, does
anybody have any good recommendations of newsgroups or forums where I
can talk to some people about this?

Thanks,
Jason
