Can Mathematica help me?

Hi -

I have questions about the use of Mathematica.

I'm new to this, having had no experience with sophisticated
mathware. I have no knowledge at all of programming languages.
But I'll try to learn whatever Mathematica requires.

I'm thinking of buying an older version of Mathematica which
is suitable for my old iMac (2001: - G3 500 Mhz processor with
256 MB SDRAM memory; with a Mac OS X 10.3.9).

What I'm especially concerned about is this:
I'm guessing that Mathematica would be able to deal with a
group of eight algebraic equations in eight unknowns, to either
give me a unique solution or let me know if I need more equations
to find unique solutions. But I don't know for sure, since
I'm pretty naive in this area. I think the procedure is called
numerical analysis? Does it have this capability and
would I be able to have the solutions (assuming that there
are any) with an accuracy of about 12 decimal points?

Thanks,
Gene
