Re: Sixteen papers published by Geometry & Topology Publications

The journal Algebraic & Geometric Topology is now a commercial
electronic journal requiring a paid subscription to access.

Well, AGT and G&T are commercial in the sense that they now require a
current subscription to access the full text of the most recent three
volumes.

But they are run on a non-profit basis, by a not-for-profit publishing
company, with the extremely modest subscription fees (set so that the
per-page cost works out in the 10-15 cents range - lower than the vast
majority of other journals) being used to cover the low (but unfortunately
nonzero) running costs.

AGT and G&T were only ever free to individuals. Institutions were
expected to buy a print and/or electronic subscription, but in many cases
didn't. The decision to partially close access was not taken lightly,
and was discussed at length by the board, but they came reluctantly to
the conclusion that this was the only sustainable option. We have also
suspended uploading the final published versions of papers to the arXiv,
partly for the same reasons, but also due to certain minor but as yet
unresolved technical issues.

Content older than the most recent three volumes (at the time of writing,
2004 and earlier) is still free to access. If it's not, then it means
something's gone wrong with our access-checking system - please email
me with details of the problem and I'll try to fix it.

Access to the G&T Monographs series is still free, and I am not aware
of any plans to change that in the foreseeable future.

Rob Kirby and Colin Rourke's original message, announcing the new access
policy, and discussing the reasons behind it, is available from

http://www.msp.warwick.ac.uk/pipermail/gt-announce/2006/000479.html

Should sci.math.research serve as a forum for promotion of such
journals? What if every commerical publisher of mathematics
journals were to promote their wares in this way here?

We will, of course, happily stop posting these occasional announcements
if the moderators or readers of this newsgroup wish us to do so.

If your newsreader supports an article scoring mechanism of some sort,
then killing articles from gt@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with subject header
including the phrase 'published by' should work.
