Back in the 1980's, in the wake of the announcement of the classification
of finite simple groups, Professor Joseph Gallian at the University of
Minnesota, Duluth interviewed many of the key players, including Danny
Gorenstein, who enthusiastically talked with Gallian for many hours.
Gallian taped all the interviews with the intention of transcribing them
and using them as source material for a mathematical history of the
classification effort. Unfortunately his grant application was denied
and his many other professional commitments forced him to abandon the
project.
The good news is that Gallian recently donated his (now digitized and
partially transcribed) tape recordings to the Archives of American
Mathematics at the University of Texas in Austin. It seems to me
that these tapes are historically very valuable, and now that they are
available to the public I want to spread the word about them, in the hope
that someone will eventually take up the task of mining their content.
I urge you to pass this information on to other mailing lists and to
anyone who might be interested in these interviews.

This sounds like something I would be interested in undertaking. Back
in the early 1980s, I was interested in group theory and its history.
Unfortunately, I am hearing impaired, so that it would likely be at
least difficult for me to undertake a transcription based upon sound
recordings. Are there any comparatively short interviews with which I
could explore how well I might expect to perform on such a
transcription project. I would suggest that, depending upon the amount
of material that awaits transcription, this is a project that could
well require a cooperative group effort.
