It was possible to obtain a reasonable speed before version 5 using some
tricks. With respect to numerics, my estimate is that Mathematica is
now at the level before Matlab 4. Why I say "before"? Because after
matlab 4 there is Simulink in Matlab. And after that there are many
other new features.

Let me say again. The same things can be done in Mathematica. The
important point is the effort and the time. Some people may argue, that
lisp is the perfect language for numerics. While it may be possible to
obtain comparable results with comparable speed for some class of
problems, I don't think that lisp or mathematica can replace fortran or
matlab for this.

Mathematica is a nice and powerfull program. I can use it and enjoy
using it. But I can not replace matlab with mathematica.
