A nice remark about the bug! I fully agree with you.
This behaviour certainly takes place in Mathematica 5.0.1.
In my copy of Mathematica 5.1 I see
In[1] := $Version
Out[1] = 5.1 for Microsoft Windows (October 25, 2004)
In[2] := Limit[(3^x + 5^x)^(1/x), x -> DirectedInfinity[-I + 1]]
Out[2] = 5
without any warnings.
RJF> It depends on which "infinity" you mean. Or MuPAD means.
Actually, as for MuPAD, by "infinity" it always understands
Mathematica's "Infinity" / "DirectedInfinity[1]", Maxima's "inf",
Derive's "inf", Axiom's "%plusInfinity" etc.
