Free software is different from freeware.. I mean software that you can
study, modify, redistribute without any limitation.

I used Scilab and Maxima, for different purposes, and I found them as
powerful as other commercial software. At least for my limited engineering
student needs.. :)

However, it seems like you don't like Maple.. Why don't you give a try to
Maxima? If you find bugs in it, you might help developers in correcting
them, or even correct them by yourself and then sharing (if you want) your
improvements with the community.
