If you installed maxima via fink, you surely must have configured X11
properly in order for the fink installation to succeed.

Well, my fink install hypothesis appears only latter so that the point remains... :-)

I think the fink
installer checks for the presence of X11.app. One thing to watch for is
that you may need to install the X11.sdk from your system install disks
in order to provide all the pieces that fink may require. There is
information about X11 configuration issues on the fink home page.

- you must start xmaxima in XTerm (X11 icon) that is :
- launch X11
- set the environment variable XMAXIMA_MAXIMA on the path of maxima (I think) (/sw/bin if you installed it with fink)
- launch xmaxima (/sw/bin/xmaxima)

It's not necessary to launch from an xterm. You can launch from the
Terminal as long as X11.app is running and you have set your DISPLAY
variable to :0.0.

I didn't know that thanks for the tip (and the correction)!

   In bash I did : export DISPLAY=':0.0'
   followed by : xmaxima

Works too! (the difference is that, in the background, maxima runs in the initial bash window instead of a separate xterm window)

I prefer the launcher method for xmaxima but this trick will be pretty useful for other X11 applications (bash provides much better Copy/Paste/Find/... support).

   Thanks again,
               Raymond
