Well, the expensive packages are generally more mathematically able, in
that they can handle a greater range of mathematics than the free
packages: calculus, (partial) differential equations, graph theory,
algebra (groups, rings, fields etc), finite mathematics, number theory,
combinatorics, etc etc They often have better graphics, greater
support for teaching with student packages and systems for online
testing and assessment. As well they may have large specialized
toolboxes for such things as signal or image processing, wavelet
analysis, and so on. They also have excellent workbook interfaces
which are easy to use, and can double as a mathematical publication
environment - either to paper (with TeX, PDF, or else) or web.
It all comes down to personal choice. I can use Maple at work, seeing
as I get it free. I could also use Mathematica if I wanted to, but
I've spent a lot of time over the last few years with Maple and don't
see the need to change. I've explored MuPAD and Maxima and like them,
too.
