You are not the only person to recommend that text. Jamie Zawinski of Mozilla infamy recommends it, and Roman Meader - a major contributor to the design of Mathematica - mentions it in the bibliography of at least two of his books. I'm pleased to find it on-line. Normaly I would purchase such a book, but I'm having to limit myself these days.

My experience is that SICP is both great and useless at the same time. Beginners are often turned off by the level of abstraction and "correctness" it exudes. That said, the authors do have something rare but valuable to say. SICP is best read in moderation, interspersed between other sources.

Other online Lisp books (in no particular order):

http://cl-cookbook.sourceforge.net/
http://www.lispworks.com/documentation/HyperSpec/Front/index.htm

The last two aren't really books, but they're still worth mentioning.
