Re: [OT] Where to post a WTB re: Scientific Word ?

Hi Folks:

Perhaps someone here can point me to an appropriate
news group where I can post a wanted-to-buy notice for
a used copy of Scientific Workplace / Scientific Word.
For those who don't know, that's a computer word
processing program (compare: WordPerfect or MS Word)
but with the added ability to compose and edit for
distribution or publication documents containing
Mathematical expressions, equations, inequalities, ....
I need a _legal_ used copy, version >= 3.0 and I can't
afford a new copy from the originator.

TIA for any information.

John H. Lindsay.

I use LaTeX in conjunction with a TeX-aware editor--in my case,
WinEdt ( http://www.winedt.com ). It has standard macros that
automate all the standard things you want to do. For equations
I use MathType ( www.dessci.com ). WinEdt is shareware so you
can use if for free if you don't mind nagging reminders to pay
the very nominal registration fee (about $30). MathType is not
free but the license is about $100 IIRC. LaTeX is open source
and free.

I do not like the other "features" integrated into Scientific
Workplace such as computer algebra, etc. I use Maple 8, but
I understand Axiom (free) and Maxima (also free) will do pretty
much the same things for you. When I need to compute something
not built into Maple I write a program and solve the problem
myself, generally better and faster than I could do with one of
the canned systems.

There are also some pretty good shareware or free graphing
programs around these days.

The main disadvantage with free software is the lack of tech
support. However, I have found a similar disadvantage with
software I have paid through the nose for ;-)
