In my version (7, quite old now), you can type Ctrl-Shift-O,
then any formula inside the [], this is a valid variable name.
You can also use styles in variables (User 1 to User 7, available
when typing a variable name), and you can change their fonts.
And you can type greek variables too (but I guess you already know that :-) ): type x then Ctrl-g to get a ksi, for example.
I think you can use Unicode characters in newer versions,
but not in mine. And there may be new tricks to get beautiful variable names :-)
