old Macaulay

Before I say anything else, let me say that I'm aware of the availability
of Macaulay2. Right now, I'm focusing on the old Macaulay.
I'm trying to install old Macaulay on an old HP Pavilion 6335 running
RedHat 7.1 Linux. When I run the makefile, gcc first complains about
varargs.h and about va_start having only one argument instead of 2,
because the source was written in K&R C. I fixed that by rewriting the
routines in question to use the ANSI C version. When I tried again to
make Macaulay, I got lots of complaints about being unable to find certain
functions, such as rmmouse. These live in mac.c. So far, I'd left the choice
of C flags as given for SUN Solaris, but I tried adding -UMACINTOSH, which
helped a little, but still led to complaints (e.g. in shell.o) about many of
these same functions not being defined.
The next thing I will try is to remove all mention of mac.o from makefile
and all calls to functions defined in mac.c. Before I go too far down
this path: if there is a simpler solution to installing the old Macaulay
from source without completely tearing up the source code, please let me know.
