Apologies for the ambiguity. You did interpret it right i.e.
diff(f,x)=0 . That was because of a stupid typo in the name of
the function. With so many terms names are not simple single
letters !

I'll recommend using the command line interface, and then tex(foo)
to generate whatever latex output you need.

This does seem faster.


You might want to follow up on the Maxima mailing list
(http://maxima.sourceforge.net/maximalist.html)
which gets much more Maxima-specific traffic than this newsgroup.

I hadn't realised. I will get on the mailing list.


Finally I'll also recommend that you get the latest version (5.10.0)
as there are lots of bug fixes and other updates.
