Greetings,
While I am NOT the OP (original poster), perhaps you won't mind my
taking a shot at answering your question.
"I'm curious why you would choose mupad over either of the big
commercial systems,..."
*I* (not the OP) choose (the student edition) of MuPad (version 3) for
my far, far more humble needs due to its far, far less insidious copy
protection system. (Recent versions of MathCAD, my previous math
software package, use the computer equivalent of an intestinal
parasite to prevent privacy. I believe the other major math software
packages do the same -- do correct me if I'm wrong!) And the price
difference is hardly trivial, especially if one is paying for it out
of one's own pocket.
My experience with MuPAD 3 has been satisfactory. Its computer
requirements are even more modest than SciFace claims -- it runs
happily on my 133Mhz Win95 laptop; it's quite stable; and its user
interface is mostly to my liking. I can only fault it for being rather
less than intuitive to use (RATHER less ;-), but I'm sure that's
partially my fault.
Cordially,
Richard Kanarek
P.S. While I do not share the original poster's concerns about
SciFace's prospects (then again, I was sure DOS would succeed against
Windows), I am a bit troubled by Mr. (Dr.?) Bondarenko's comments
about MuPAD 4. Has it's stability and/or accuracy decreased compared
to MuPAD 3? Is bug crushing even now underway at MuPAD? How does MuPad
4 compare to Mathematica et al? (Such a comparison probably isn't fair
as each package doubtlessly has its own advantages and peculiarities,
but why let fairness stop us? ;-)
If there is a good, trustworthy review of MuPAD 4 somewhere, I'd
certainly appreciate a pointer.
