So are there any plans for Mathematica on Solaris with an Intel CPU ..???
You seem to think this is the place to ask questions about Mathematica
that should be asked of the company. Why should you write to a few
hundred people who look at this newsgroup? There is one for
mathematica, but for your question, you should contact WRI, as you
apparently have done in the past.
If your question is, "Would you be interested in Mathematica on
Solaris with Intel?" I suppose that might be relevant to the
newsgroup, though not by much.
I can't speak for Karen, but I guess one good reason for her to post to sci.math.symbolic might be speed of response.
Looking at Karen's last question (Manipulate - discrete values with names + images) she posted that at 05/27/08 14:14 and received a response from Jon McLoone from Wolfram at 05/28/08 10:40. That is about 20 hours later. (Times might differ a bit depending on what timezone and news server you use.)
It's quite likely a post sent to comp.soft-sys.math.mathematica would not appear within 20 hours and almost guaranteed no response would be received within 20 hours.
support@wolfram<dot>com will take about 3-5 days to answer.
In contrast, she got a response here within 20 hours.
Like it or not (and I don't think you do), sci.math.symbolic is a reasonably efficient way to get quick answers to simple Mathematica questions. It does not have as many expert users as comp.soft-sys.math.mathematica, but responses are quicker.
I attempted to find a charter and/or RFD for sci.math.symbolic but was unable to, so it's hard to say if such posts are on or off topic. But from a practical point of view, efficiency is relatively high. She did not spam her question to lots of irrelevant newsgroups either. It seems more on topic than a lot of the things on here - and I think you know what I mean!
Moderated newsgroups like comp.soft-sys.math.mathematica have their own advantages (it does not suffer the **** that often appears on sci.math.symbolic), but disadvantages too (a very long time for responses to appear).
