The photographs are thirty years old, so if you do beat up somebody based
on the 'photos you may end up assaulting a total innocent. The photographs
were taken when Mehran was a PhD student at Cambridge University,
attending some symposium or other - whetevr you may think of him now, back
then he was a bright young thing working on something that would pass
academic scrutiny. I'm with chip - in 1979 Mehran was were we all (I
hope!) were at that period in our life, hoping to do great things in our
field of scholarship; 'something' has happened that has resulted ih his
approach being offstream - the last person I met in a similar position,
where her written work was one page repeated over & over, and yet which
she claimed as the complete report, had a 'nervous breakdown' - depression
- natal-induced mental health issues - call it what you will. She
recovered, and I would hope that we all hope that Mehran, too, can deliver
his 1979 hope of great things in mathematics. Just a shame that, on
present form, he is not doing so - but one day he may marshall his ideas,
reduce his wide-sweeping claims, and prove that he really does have
something to say.
