What you mean by "famous" (in quotes) is really notorious.

James does have his moments. Accoring to the bulk of his critics, he has a
fondness for what mathematicians call "naïve" solutions - the math term
whose English equivalent is "simplistic." James, on the other hand, tends to
assume that those who criticize him in that way have a love of complexity
for its own sake.

He has this tendency to start "leave-it-to-Jeeves" arguments. The kind of
problems and proffered solutions he brings up tend to be sufficiently
rarified to require a lot of background reading to settle the question. The
reason why he's argued with, rather than simply ignored, is in part because
he has sufficient math knowledge to be beyond ignorable. Anoter sci.math
poster brought this up in a thread which James himself was not involved in
back in May of 1999, in a thread called "Equivalency of Infinite Sets:"

[Quote from thread: "The two most hated people on this group right now are
Nathan and James Harris, but I feel that both of them have a much better
mathematical background than you
do. James is lightyears ahead of you, and if he tried to explain his
work more coherently and not insult people he'd be accepted..."]
