In math, like most things, it does matter what others think. Math is
not something where you go off by yourself--its a community thing or
else its meaningless. One must communicate his ideas to others.
This is how students learn.
Mathematicians also write up their own results, like all scientists,
to get comments from others (who often find mistakes you have made).
They also read and comment on the work of others, and find their
mistakes.
Then you correct your mistakes or improve your ideas, and continue.
The idea of someone who knows nothing about a subject (and refuses to
learn from others) doing original work, is ridiculous.
