For the fourth graders and fifth graders, ask them to compute S =
(1+2+3+...+100) to see if there is any living "Gauss" among them, :-)
Then, show them (1) a geometric "view", and (2) an algebraic "view" of why
the following is true:
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = (4) (4 + 1) / 2
Then, show them how to compute S.
BTW, do they know how to multiply and divide in first grade (don't remember
any more)?
