   This is the beginning of Calculus. If you haven't taken calculus, then I wouldn't expect you to understand it. However, if it is your son's homework, he should! Try making him explain it to you (and if he can't, make him get out his textbook and really go over it with him).

  For the second one, finding the limit of (1-x^2)/(1-x) as x goes to 0, you can factor 1-x^2= (1-x)(1+x) and so, for any x other than 0,
(1- x^2)/(1- x)= 1+ x and has the same limit as x goes to 0.

  For the first one, finding the limit of (e^h-1)/h as h goes to 0, that's either very easy or very hard depending on what knowledge of calculus you (or, more correctly, your son) have. The answer is 1 but I don't know how to explain it to you without using calculus.
