Why we call it Quadratic Equation

Hi all,
Just a curious thought came in my mind,
Why quadratic equation is called quadratic, as it has noting to do
with quad (that is 4), the highest power is 2 and that of there are 2
roots.
Does this have any significance or it is just as coincidence?
