You have to distinguish between modern Greek and ancient (classical)
Greek. I heard they are quite different languages. I bet the
pronunciation was different, too (any sound tracks from B.C. left?)

That's right, although the final r isn't pronounced much at all. Don't
pronounce it the Texan way.
