Google (http://www.google.com/) is useful: a search on _phd "statement
of purpose" brings up a whole pile of useful-looking results, mostly
from US universities. Some of the first few include:
http://www.infozee.com/application-issues/essays-sop.htm
http://www.cs.rpi.edu/~whuang/other/purposeadvice.html
and
http://career.berkeley.edu/Article/041112b-so.stm (part 1)
http://career.berkeley.edu/Article/041119b-so.stm (part 2)
But if you run the search yourself, you'll find a heap more.
Good luck!
A.
