Read the book. It is quite clearly written. I don't know the English
translation of the term, but the metaphor relates to optimally frying
bacon to a crisp without burning the fat, thus ensuring maximum lard
gain, Melch is actually exposing great insights on Number Theory all
the time. It is a fascinating read, the corollarys on factoring are
just a minor part though.
