I suppose that's why the whole identity of a book can be captured in a
short number - the ISBN - which seems to work quite well.
Alternatively, if you must have a guaranteed unique identifier then an
email address works well (at least until they change their ISP).

Watch out for more news on this subject when "rfid" becomes more widely
used on consumer products.
