Matrices are useful in solving systems of linear equations (simultaneous
equations). A finite element model may consist of a system of thousands
of equations which would take forever to work out by hand. By Gaussian
elimination, the system is reduced to the identity matrix and each
variable is solved. Such a model can reveal the load distribution in
complex structures.
