That's the point. The surface sphere is a 2D space in its own right,
and the use of lattitude and longitude gives a complete specification
of every point on that space. The fact that longitude and lattitude
can't specify points outside the sphere is no more a flaw than the
fact that the use of (x,y,z) cannot specify points outside of Euclidean
3-space.
