If your goal is complete comprehension, the best way to read techincal
matter is to do so three times. The first time, try to get the big
picture, and do not concentrate on details (e.g., the nitty gritty of
proofs). The second time, *do* concentrate on the details; read it with
a fine-tooth comb (is that possible?). The third time, review what you
have learned from the first two times.

If this is a textbook with exercises, you also have a fourth
opportunity. Your homework assignment guides your reading: Return to the
text to help you understand what each problem means and entails. In
practice, you may need to combine this with the third reading above.

Personally, I prefer to do at least the first read-through before the
lecture. (As an instructor, I always assign reading at the beginning of
each lecture. This assignment covers the material for the lecture to be
offered at the next meeting.) This may be a matter of taste, and it also
depends on how well you follow the instructor. If you find his/her
lectures to be much clearer than the text, you may wish to listen first
and read later. On the other hand, if you have trouble following the
lectures as they are presented, you should read the text before the
lecture. The bottom line is, if the reading and the lectures are
covering the same material, then they are reinforcing each other, and
you should use the method which is most effective for you.
