though shannon's 1948 paper is awesome, it doesn't have as much content as you might like.
depending on your definition of "beginner", i would suggest anything from an intro to communications book (for fundamentals) to something like "error control systems..." by stephen wicker. wicker's book gets nice and theoretical, jumping in to galois theory pretty early, but sometimes a little GF(q) is necessary to get the complete picture. if you can get by the really theoretical parts, the book is very very readable and good for fundamentals and basic ideas.
