It's easy to forge "From:" headers, but it's a bit harder to forge the
path header. Of course, one can also digitally sign his mail

Whether it's a fundamental flaw in the "Internet/email protocol" is
debatable. First, it doesn't have much to do with the Internet
protocol (usually, people mean TCP/IP by that term). Second, the
reason it's easy to forge the "From:" header is that simplicity was
preferable to security. It would require much more overhead to keep
people from mangling the emails leaving their own machines.
