Even though the question isn't on topic, it gives me an excuse to
mention something I've always wanted to mention:
I've noticed something while driving that might be a sort of backwards
evidence. I drive past some lights on towers (maybe aircraft warning
lights) and notice that the light seems to jump across very wide arcs,
and appears as widely separated spots as I move my eyes, unless I look
at the lights very carefully.
My guess is that they are some kind of gas discharge lights that turn
on and off rapidly, and probably stay on for a very short time. I
guess further that the discontinuity of the flashing prevents the brain
mechanism that would make the light appear to have a fixed position
from working correctly. If this is true, there must be a mechanism to
start with.
The discontinuity of the flashing light gives a series of spots across
the retina instead of a trace.
