Even one of their own prophets has said, "Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons."
So Paul has a Cretan saying this, hence the paradox. Surely Paul was making a reference to this paradox, wasn't he? I have to admit that this is a shear guess on my part, and I have absolutely no evidence to back up this claim.
