I don't think any careful person says "x _approaches_ infinity", as it
makes no sense. The normal (sloppy) 'shorthand' might be "x goes to
infinity", but this is a bit like says "as the cursor goes off the
screen" - no-one tries to argue there must be a cursor position called
"off the screen".
