*every* computer with graphical display has always been able to display
unicode...

Open your eyes, "guy": Windows can certainly display unicode, but not every
news reader can. Idem on MacOSX, Linux, etc...
Furthermore, I'm not certain a good news reader suffices: if the news
*server* decides not to store unicode characters, what will you do, then ?
Unicode is pretty, but the Internet has not completely switched yet.
Such a complain, _here_, makes no sense at all: it's not the job of "guys"
on sci.math to rewrite software for news reader, OS, and to change the way
the Internet runs. Welcome in the third millenium ;-)
For now, you have: TeX, HTML, PS, PDF and ASCII art which have all
advantages and drawbacks. And frankly, writing math with only Unicode is
ridiculous: you'll be able to write an integral, but not much more.
