It was a 1997 dissertation. The woman was at least 40.
Huh? First, "described as between 40 and 50" does not
quite imply "at least 40". And more to the point,
someone 40 years old today was 32 in 1997. It's happens all the time (alas) that people get PhD's in math
at that age or older.
