A string of unit length is cut into n random strings.
(1)What is the expected value of the shortest string
(2)What is the expected value of the longest string
Some things you might consider; these may or may not help.
- The expected value of a nonnegative random variable is the intergral of its tail.
- The joint distribution of the lengths is Dirchlet.
- Try a recursive method by conditioning, either on the first cut point chosen or the smallest cut point chosen.
