i'm thinking of learning about matrices. is linear algebra pretty much
the branch of math that covers them?

Yes, you are right. You could start with a Schaum's Outline - this
series whch cover everything, just about, is very good for someone such
as yourself who wishes to "self learn". It has numerous worked
examples as well as exercises with solutions.
You can probably get one at Amazon for a small amount.
