Archimedes and his Pi Algorithm

Does anyone know how Archimedes discovered how to find the perimeter of a hexagon inscribed in an unit circle without using trigonometry and how is this value related to that of a 12-sided polygon?
I can't seem to get this value but i know the radius of the circle is 1/2.
