Re: What Software to Type Math In?

It's a fact we prefer LaTeX, but anyway, everybody is free.
And in some cases, Word is to be prefered: mainly in enterprises
where clients are already working with Word, or when they use software
linked with Office tools. Or for some specific uses, like translation.
But when choice is free, I've always seen LaTeX.

Some reason for that:
* better formating
* excellent control on very complex formulas
* possibility to write programs that export LaTex files (automatic
conversion of formulas, as done by Maple)
* open file format: you don't depend on Word's bugs (Eq editor in
Word for Mac is not as powerful, for instance), and there is
very little risk that future versions won't be compatible
* even in that case, files are human-readable, and may be reused,
whereas .doc files always need Word.
* files are smaller
* there is a huge amount of add-ons and style, especially to
help produce articles
* Word may hang or slow down when there are many pages, or
many equations or drawings
* You can manipulate a LaTeX file one page at a time, not
recompiling everything each time you modify a comma

I'm sure people who use LaTeX very often will have many
other points.

But, for quick-and-dirty that don't involve many equations,
Word is still helpful.

You protest and protect far too much. Use what
you like and I'll get on with my life never having had a problem with
the equation editor I have.

Your statement about "pity" suggests you aren't convinced yourself, by
the way.
