So was the Wiles news in the headlines, or in a little article buried
on a back page somewhere? As I said, I never saw it in the papers, or
heard anything about it on TV or radio. In fact, I had never heard of
Andrew Wiles and had no idea that FLT had been proven until I stumbled
across the information about Wiles in one of the JSH threads when I
first started reading sci.math in 2001.
Now we're quibbling over semantics: is a story in the general news
section of a paper "headlines" or must it be front page? Well, no
matter. I googled. The first hit for "andrew wiles fermat headlines"
says:
To make headlines in the New York Times is no average task. The
headlines are reserved for the truly tragic or truly magnificent
news of top importance. Keeping this in mind, think back to May
1993. Smiling brightly on the cover of one New York Times issue
was Professor Andrew Wiles standing in front of what seems to be
mathematical gibberish. The picture, accompanied with the
headline "Professor Tackles Math's Holy Grail" should indicate
utmost importance.
Thus, it seems to me that the story "made headlines" in any reasonable
interpretation of the phrase. At least if we believe some undergrad's
homework, but he seems to give easily confirmable claims.
