I'm sure I read somewhere that Fermat never
a single proof. Maybe it wasn't so much secrecy buta
feeling shared by him and his group ofcorrespondents
that by each pursuing problems without knowingdetails
of the proofs claimed by the others they would bemore
likely to explore the ground more thoroughly andfind
more proofs, if that makes sense.
Yes, that makes sense. In addition, the secrecy may
also have been
intended to maintain the atmosphere of mystery and
excitement.
Apparently, he greatly enjoyed posing hard challenge
problems to other
mathematicians. It wouldn't make sense for him to
defuse the challenge
by revealing all the methods in advance.
I found a short bio which provides support for both
Roman Binder's
secrecy claim as well as your suggestion that perhaps
he was
withholding details of his methods so as to provoke
further
exploration.

I've just glanced to this web-page for to know some
more details about challenges between mathematicians
in the time of P.Fermat.
Once more I can support the possibility to uncover
one of the almost elementary methods helping to P.Fermat
in secrecy to support his results, and especially to FLT.
