A very good and oft overlooked theorem from two millenia ago is Heron's
(Hero's) formula for the area of a triangle. I think is ranks with the
Pythagorean theorem. Heron's formula calculates the area of a triangle
from only the lengths of the three sides. We usually drop a vertical
and apply trig or something. Heron's Formula is extraordinary simple;
I will admit that with 30 years post PhD experience I have never gotten
through the proof. Dunham's "Journey Through Genius" has it. The
proof has more curves than Landsdown St. in San Francisco.
