Thanks all for the suggestions. In using Amazon's online features
to scan tables of contents, Jaynes seems to be the best
candidate so far. The "surprise me" (random page display)
feature gave me a page on ancillary information, which looks
like exactly the topic that prompted this search in the first
place (I'd been scribbling conditional probabilities and kind of
circling around this concept from scratch).
