The idea of author-anonymous refereeing has been suggested before. It
has merit because, unfortunately, human nature often makes papers by
famous people get little or no refereeing while papers from unknowns
might not even reach the referee stage simply because the author is
unknown to the editor or is from a backwater school. This is unfair to
both the famous and the not famous, of course. Even big names make
mistakes and they might not get caught prior to publication, damaging
the author's reputation.
