So I finally found a simple surrogate factoring idea, but is it
practical?

You guys are just adding to the clutter;
[mensanator@xxxxxxx]
This is the most asinine statement I've ever heard.
Come again? I expect that most people consider gibberish to be clutter, in
which case, yes, posting gibberish adds to the clutter.
If you would take the time to actually read a few JSH threads it's
obvious that trolls feed off those misguided individuals who post
serious reponses.
I don't believe that's true. Over time, JSH gets fewer serious responses
(reply kind #1) of any kind. For years now most replies are from folks just
poking at him (reply kind #2). In recent times, gibberish replies (reply
kind #3) rival #2 replies for sheer volume. I expect I've made more #1
replies to JSH than everyone else combined this year, and those almost never
trigger a #3 reply. I fully expect that this one will, though :-)
In any case, Paul didn't call for more replies of any kind, just less of #3.
That is like throwing gasoline on a fire.
Most replies are ignored by JSH, but it's true that the #1 replies are most
likely to trigger a response from him. #1 and #2 replies come in response
to JSH posts; #3 replies also come in response to those, but also in
response to other #3 replies.
For example, look at the very recent:
SF: Tandem factorization back, new approach
thread. I count 29 messages: 8 from JSH, 0 #1 replies, 11 #2, and 10 #3.
7 of the #3 replies were in response to other #3 replies, 0 to #2 or #1
replies, and 3 to JSH posts.
cross posting doesn't help
And by snipping the groups THAT JSH CROSSPOSTED TO,
you are just encouraging more noise since readers of those
groups won't even see your opinion.
Silence encourages more noise? Hmm.
and your repartee is nowhere near as clever as you think it is.
If only JSH's math were up to your high standards.
Hey, here's a thought...why don't you direct your little editorials
to him?
Nobody hopes for civil behavior from JSH. I expect Paul hopes that people
doing #3 can still summon up sense and self-control enough to stop doing it,
or at least reduce it. "Banana" and "peanut butter" and "pointed stick"
were all kinda funny the first few times, but after 100s of repetitions even
this prime comic material is losing its, umm, startling freshness.
