starting point for the study of Bessel functions?

One reason might be that the Bessel equation comes up
in an extremely natural way when one tries to solve
Laplace's problem with cilindrical or spherical symmetryies.

I like the Bessel equation better than yours because it
screams "regular singular point" very loudly ;-)
