Boy, I thought some of my previous stomping grounds were
crank-magnets, but I have to say, they have *nothing* on
sci.math! Frankly I'm just astounded, and I've been on
usenet for 20 years.
sci.math is a stronghold of rational discourse compared to sci.physics.
Does anyone ever float the idea of a moderated group?
sci.math.research fits that bill, although it's quite possible to get
helpful responses to on-topic questions on sci.math, and even possible to
skip most of the drek (if you're so inclined) quickly with practice. Except
for one especially abusive cross-posting, high-volume, umm, "innovator", the
groups alt.math.undergrad and alt.math.recreational are pretty clean.
alt.sci.math.combinatorics is very clean, although lucky to average one post
per day.
And you don't *literally* mean to suggest that someone
has insisted that odd numbers were prime before, do
you? Seriously?
By the VERY DEFNITION of PRIME, a PRIME REAL NUMBER is NOT DIVIDABLE by 2.
By the VERY DEFINTOIN of ODD, a ODD REAL NUMER is NOT DIVIDABLE by 2. GET
IT NOW? THEIR THE SAME THING!!!!! BY DEFINITION!!!!!!!!
While it's happened, that's not really par for the course. Most endless
(and endlessly recurring) ill-informed "debates" involve the infinite in
some fashion, from "new theories" about 0.999... to disputing Cantor
directly. Claims to have solved famous difficult problems by simple means
are relatively rare in comparison. Their proponents have legendary stamina,
though :-)
